As I am just starting out with this website, there are only a few posts at the moment, mostly focusing on IELTS tips and advice. However, as my website grows new posts will cover the rest of the course. By clicking on the ‘FOLLOW‘ button you will receive frequent posts to help you achieve a better score in your IELTS test.

The lessons and tips that I will be posting are for those aiming to achieve at least Band 6 or a higher score.

What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for The International English Language Testing System. It is widely recognised as a test of language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the primary language of communication.

There are two types of IELTS test:

  1. Academic (taken for entry to undergraduate or postgraduate studies or for professional reasons).
  2. General (taken for entry to vocational or training programmes not at degree level, for admission to secondary schools and for immigration purposes).

Both types are made up of four parts – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Listening and Speaking tests are the same for both Academic and General Training. However, the Reading and Writing tests are different.

IELTS Modules

  1. Listening part of the IELTS test is usually 30 minutes long. You will be required to listen to four tracks (two conversations, two monologues). You will need to answer ten questions on each track.
  2. Reading part of the IELTS test is 60 minutes long. You will be asked to read three passages and answer 13-14 questions on each passage.
  3. Writing part of the test is also 60 minutes long. You will have to complete two tasks: a) write a description of information in a chart, graph, table or diagram. At least 150 words. This will take you approximately 20 minutes. b) write an essay in response to an opinion or a question. At least 250 words. This will take you about 40 minutes.
  4. Speaking part of the test is usually 11-14 minutes long. You will be required to answer questions about yourself and common topics.

Please remember that the Listening, Reading and Writing modules are always taken on the same day, in the above particular order, without a break. These three modules will need to be completed within 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Speaking module may be scheduled on the same day or up to a week before or after the other modules.
